Mike Lazaridis, Co-founder BlackBerry
Children of Turkey was able to realize his dream of a high school teacher that someday electronic functions, computers, and wireless will become one. Through its findings, Mike Lazaridis successfully combines the unique technologies and lifestyles into one: the BlackBerry.
In between busy receiving guests from several countries in the Wireless Enterprise Symposium (WES) 2009 in Orlando, Florida, United States, beginning in May 2009, finally Mike Lazaridis, founder of the BlackBerry, can take the time to Compass. “What can I deliver? I start with the BlackBerry condition now, “he said.
Unlike previously imagined, from alotnya set schedule with the representatives of the BlackBerry, Lazaridis figure looks cool, humble, and candid. The interview was held at a hotel in Orlando.
There was no bodyguard, no assistant or in the surrounding areas. One of the most influential people of the world’s version of Time magazine in 2005 that look like ordinary people.
Unsophisticated, but rather the authority of this decade as an important inventors increasingly emanated. That morning, Lazaridis serve an interview over breakfast sandwich. “Upps …,” she said while holding a sandwich that fell to the floor. With a relaxed, President and Co-Chief Executive Officer and Director of Research In Motion (RIM) was picked again.
He opened a dialogue with the numbers. “Currently the number of BlackBerry subscriber 25 million people there,” he said, handing her book Life on the BlackBerry, RIM’s 2009 Annual Report.
“This latest report,” he said. Doctorate in engineering who do not finish this course not only guarding the RIM from the technological side. He also mastered the management, marketing, product strategy and the invasion into parts of the world.
Last point is what the world creates a new phenomenon: people in 160 countries are infatuated with a new way to communicate and send data. He is responsible for the outbreak “virus” technology and lifestyle.
According to Milward Brown ranking Top 100 Most Powerful Brands, a BlackBerry-51 ranking for the world and known as the fastest growing with numbers increasing 390 percent.
Importance of research
With a sluggish global conditions, the year 2009 RIM BlackBerry has sent 26 million to a number of countries. January 2009, the BlackBerry has made the BlackBerry device to-50 million. “RIM’s fiscal year 2009 revenue rose 84 percent from 6 billion U.S. dollars to 11 billion U.S. dollars,” he said.
Year 2009, BlackBerry awarded GSMA Chairman’s Award for pioneering the field of wireless. In the midst of stagnant new discovery, you could say Lazaridis dominate as inventors in this decade.
Lazaridis aware, RIM’s success is the impact of science. Therefore, he believes a university-driven science can be expected to bring changes.
Support for the research world unmitigated. In October 2000 he founded the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics to fund 100 million dollars taken from his personal bag.
April 2004, with his wife he donated 33.3 million U.S. dollars for the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo. May 2005, he again gave an additional 17.2 million U.S. dollars to construct the building of the Institute for Quantum Computing and the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology.
Lazaridis not only the inventor of the BlackBerry. Approximately 50 of his patents on wireless range and industrial display systems. DigiSync, barcode readers for the film industry, was also under his patent, which earned him an Emmy award and an Academy Award in 1999.
History
Lazaridis is not a native Canadian. He was born March 14, 1961 in Istanbul, Turkey. Both his parents are from Greece brought Lazaridis to Canada when she was five years old.
Lazaridis 1966 living in Windsor, Ontario. His talent began to appear since he went to school in Windsor. This nerd spends much of her time in the library.
Age 12 years she was awarded the Windsor Public Library for having devoured all the books in the library science. In high school, interest in electronic facilitated since met with great teachers. In every interview he always refers to the high school teachers who become the best motivator.
In 1979 he decided to study at the University of Waterloo Electrical Engineering, majoring in computer science. As a student, he got a 500 000 dollar contract from General Motors (GM) to build a computer network control display.
From the fund’s contracts with GM, plus a 15 000 dollar loan from his parents, who were students Lazaridis founded RIM. He came out of college two months before graduation.
RIM is engaged in barcode technology for the film. Gradually, RIM has expanded into wireless and in 1999 introduced the BlackBerry.
Although eventually drop out of university, thanks to the dedication, in October 2001 she was awarded Doctor of Engineering from the University of Waterloo. In June 2003 he was even appointed as the eighth Chancellor of the university.
BlackBerry is unique because it has its own system for managing e-mail, server technology that was primarily owned by another company. At the other mobile phone producers are satisfied with using the existing system, Lazaridis thinks differently. “We were very careful in developing this device. BlackBerry has a unique system, this is what makes our service will excel in the eyes of consumers, “he said.
He believes, in the future need for higher data transmission and wireless will be the solution. “We combine the functionality of mobile devices with computer functions,” he said.
Is the BlackBerry will replace the desktop computer or laptop? Is the BlackBerry also has ambitions to take over the popular GSM telecommunications system at the moment?
“No, we are also involved in the development of other technologies,” he said. Technology to GSM, for example, the network could still be utilized with a variety of research development.
Behind the ambition to make the BlackBerry an epidemic, Lazaridis still run into the world of research, developing various technological possibilities that are available. So, do not have to be dominant and kill the others if you want to succeed. (Amir Sodikin/Kompas)
