Tianhe-1A (The World’s Fastest Computer) : Supercomputers Made in China, Break World Record

National University of Defense Technology in China have successfully created the world’s fastest super computer with a speed 43 percent faster than the fastest supercomputers available today. This is confirmed by Nvidia Corp., which supplies most of the major components of these supercomputers.

Sumit Gupta, Senior Product Manager of Nvidia, explained that the super computer that is named Tianhe-1A will have a performance of 2.507 petaflop or more than 2 quadrillion Calculations per second. One petaflop equivalent to 1,000 trillion calculations per second. This computer has exceeded the capabilities of computer systems very quickly which was recorded in the “Global Top 500 List of Supercomputers”, published in June.

China is to invest in this computer to enhance research and simulations for climate modeling, genome research, alternative energy, related to seismograph, and also the needs of the military. Since China started to invest in the technology sector in 2002, China had registered himself as the country’s number three in the world who have high-performance computing power after the U.S. and Europe.

Tianhe-1A using Tesla M2050 Nvidia 7168 graphics processing units and 14,336 Intel Xeon. This computer will also be using three times more energy efficient than it is today. The system is designed to have the computing power equivalent to 175,000 laptops.
